Arthrotomy: It was a conventional method, which involves creating an opening in the joint to either drain any excess fluid or view or repair any defects or tears, which may have occurred due to injury, infections or other ailments.

Arthroscopy: It is a minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical procedure, which can be used to visualize the internal anatomy of the joints and also as a treatment technique. It has shown to be advantageous over traditional techniques of open surgery as the joint does not have to be opened up completely, only small incisions are made, the instruments used are smaller, the recovery time is less, and also gives less trauma to connective tissue. It has been proved to be the treatment of choice in professional athletes as they get frequently injured and achieve a faster healing time. It can be done using a small fiber optic camera and special type of fluid on various joints of the body such as:

  • Knee – It is commonly used to treat meniscus injury, reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament, osteoarthritis,
  • Shoulder – It can be used for treatment of rotator cuff tears, frozen shoulder, chronic tendonitis, removal of loose bodies, and partial tears of long biceps tendon and shoulder instability.
  • Hip – It can be used to diagnose unexplained hip pain, femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears, foreign body removal, hip washout for infections, cartilage or chondral lesions, ligamentumteres injuries, iliopsoastendinopathy, trochanteric pain syndrome, sciatic nerve compression and direct assessment of hip replacement.
  • Wrist – It is mainly done to investigate and treat symptoms of repetitive strain injury, fractures of wrist, torn and damage ligaments and in cases of osteoarthritis.
  • Spinal – It can be used to treat spinal conditions such as spinal disc herniation, spinal deformity, tumors and general spine trauma.
  • Temperomandibular joint – It is performed in conditions such as temperomandibularjont dysfunction, treat infections, replace the displaced disc to its correct position

Arthrotomy: It was a conventional method, which involves creating an opening in the joint to either drain any excess fluid or view or repair any defects or tears, which may have occurred due to injury, infections or other ailments.

Joint Replacement Surgeries: The surgeries performed are mainly for replacing an arthritic, painful or a dysfunctional joint. A treatment of choice in conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis or osteo necrosis, congenital dislocation of the hip joint, acetabular dysplasia (shallow hip joint), Frozen or loose shoulder, traumatized or misaligned joint, joint stiffness etc.The surgery is often followed by a strict regimen of protected function, healing, rehabilitation using physiotherapy. The materials used are keeping in mind the strength, utility, weight bearing of the joint and medical imaging properties. Some of the latest materials used are made of such as alumina, zirconia & titanium using latest techniques. A combination or alloy of two different materials is also used for enhanced strength and longwearing capabilities. The earlier techniques followed would require longer rehabilitation and larger incisions, however newer techniques have a minimally invasive computer assisted/guided approach. This helps the surgeon in improved accuracy; avoid soft tissue injury and improved patient outcomes. The joints commonly replaced are:

  • Hip joints
  • Knee joints
  • Shoulder joints
  • Intervertebral discs etc. through minimally invasive technique (2-3 inches incision size).

Sports Injuries: These are referred to as injuries, which commonly arise from athletic activities. These are a result of acute trauma or due to overuse of a particular body part. These can be termed as contusion, sprains, strains, wounds and spinal cord injuries. Some injuries can lead to severe situations such as hemiparalysis, hemiplegia, quadriplegia etc. Surgical interventions and treatments are provided in such conditions which can be revamping and reassuring the quality of life and care. They can commonly involve surgeries and physiotherapy interventions.
